Introduction to the River Risån

The River Risån is a prime example of a slow-flowing meadow and forest river. It meanders in countless curves through the landscape, creating a unique mosaic of wet meadows, floodplain forests, and still water areas. It is a diverse body of water for nature experiences and targeted fishing.

For long stretches, the Risån meanders gently through the landscape. The deep outer bends and calm pools are ideal locations for pike, while the dense bank vegetation allows for rich nature observations.

Fishing on the River Risån

What fish can I catch in the Risån?

The Risån is a diverse river. In the calmer, deeper sections, pike and perch are the main target fish. In the faster-flowing, oxygen-rich areas with gravel beds, you also have a good chance of catching resident brown trout and grayling.

Why does the river meander so much?

The strong meanders are caused by the very gentle slope of the flat landscape. Over centuries, the river seeks the path of least resistance, thus forming the characteristic loops.

Which fishing methods are recommended?

Light spin fishing is very versatile. For pike and perch, small wobblers and soft plastics are suitable. In the fast sections, fly fishing or spin fishing with small spinners is the best method to outsmart trout and grayling.

How is the access to the river?

Access is often limited to bridges and a few spots where paths lead directly to the water. Exploring by canoe is therefore by far the best method.

Where the gradient increases, the Risån changes its character. Faster, gravelly sections provide the perfect habitat for brown trout and grayling and are an attractive destination for spin and fly fishers.

Nature & Canoeing on the River Risån

The floodplain landscape of the Risån is a biodiversity hotspot. The wet meadows and oxbow lakes are breeding and resting areas for countless bird species, including waders and ducks. The banks are lined with diverse vegetation, ranging from dense forests to open wet meadows and marshy alder carr.
