The Salmon (Lax)
The king of rivers and every angler's dream
Introduction to Salmon Fishing
The Atlantic salmon is the most prestigious fish species in the region. Its life cycle, which leads it from the sea hundreds of kilometers back to its birth river, is fascinating. The Vindelälven is one of the most important rivers for the wild salmon population in the entire Baltic Sea.

A Matter of Patience
Salmon fishing is not an easy undertaking and often requires days of patience for a single bite. From Bettys Hus, the lower and middle sections of the Vindelälven are reachable as a day trip. Hiring a local guide is strongly recommended for beginners.

Where in the region can I fish for salmon?
Exclusively in the Vindelälven. It is the only river in the immediate vicinity with a significant salmon run. The fish do not migrate into the other lake and river systems.
What is special about the Vindelälven salmon?
It is a completely wild stock of Baltic salmon that reproduces naturally. The fish are known for their enormous fighting strength and beauty.
What are the best fishing methods?
Fishing from a boat with trolled wobblers and spoons is very common. In the rapids, fishing with a two-handed fly rod is the classic and often most successful method.
When is the best time for salmon fishing?
The main run of salmon usually begins at the end of June and lasts until August. The peak of the season is usually in July, depending on the water level and temperature.
What are the most important rules?
The rules are extremely strict and vary depending on the river section (FVO). There are often daily or annual limits (e.g., only one salmon kept per angler per year), slot limits (only fish of a certain size may be kept), and mandatory catch reporting.
What is the biggest challenge for the salmon run?
The salmon run in the Vindelälven depends on the functionality of the fish ladder at the Stornorrfors hydropower plant in the Ume Älv river. Without this artificial help, the fish could not reach their spawning grounds.
